WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW IN ADVANCE OF A PLUMBING EMERGENCY

Experience has shown that we are usually unprepared for inevitable plumbing emergencies. Here are a few tips that may be useful if you are ever faced with an unexpected plumbing situation.

  • Know where the water heater breaker is located and make sure it is labeled correctly.
  • Know where the breaker for the well pump is located and make sure it is labeled correctly.
  • Know where the water heater shut-off valve is located. If you are facing the front of the unit, it is usually located on the top right side of the water heater on the cold water line.
  • Know where the main water shut-off valve is located (usually in a closet, garage, entrance to the crawl space or close to well tank).
  • Know where the water meter is located (usually in the front yard close to the street).
  • Know where the gas meter is located (usually outside close to the house foundation).
  • Know where the gas operated appliance shut-off valves are located. By code, they must be located in the same room and not more than 3 feet from the unit. (gas logs, gas water heater, etc.).
  • Know where the water shut-off valves are located for the kitchen and bathroom sinks (usually underneath the sink connected to pipes coming out of the wall).
  • Know where the water shut-off valve is located for the refrigerator (usually behind the unit in a little box in the wall).
