Prevent clogging your septic tank

Maintaining your septic System

If you are like most homeowners, you never give much thought to what happens when waste goes down in to your drain. But if you rely on septic system to treat and dispose of your household waste water, what you do not know can hurt you and your family and budget.

When a septic system fails, inadequately treated domestic waste can reach the ground water. Bacteria and viruses from human waste can cause dysentery, hepatitis and many another harmful diseases.

Failing septic systems are also expensive to repair or replace and improper maintenance by home owners is a common cause of early system failure. The minimal amount of preventative maintenance that septic system require, cost  very little in comparison to the cost of a new system. It typically cost from $4,000 to 15,000 to replace a failing septic system, compared to $150 to $500 average per year cost to have  a septic system pumped and inspected.

The most important thing to know is that your Septic System is not meant to be used as Trash Can, so DO NOT FLUSH any of the following items down your toilet:

  • baby wipes
  • dental floss
  • feminine hygiene products
  • condoms
  • diapers
  • cotton swabs
  • cigarette butts
  • matches
  • coffee grounds
  • cat litter
  • paper towels
  • napkins
  • medications
  • paints, pesticides, or other hazardous chemicals into your system

Tree root invasion of septic tanks, absorption fields is a long standing problem in the maintenance of on-site treatment systems. Many trees and shrubs readily invade these systems because they can provide air space, water and nutrients. Not all trees and shrubs invade septic systems. Make sure to not plant any trees close to the drain field or septic tank.

The best way to treat your septic system during the year is a treatment with bio products which naturally dissolves the volume of sludge and scum. Recommended treatment is once a month in household with 2-4 members. If your family has more than 4 member it is recommended to be treated twice a month. There are different varieties of brand names and qualities on market which works good but as a home owner I prefer BIO-CLEAN products. They contain billions of bacteria and as they eat, they double in number every 30 minutes! Unrestricted by gravity, they spread through the entire plumbing system, devouring all the organic waste.

Do not forget that your septic tank need to be pumped out periodically depend on household members and capacity of your tank.

If you follow all these suggestions and still have a clogged septic line, then it’s probably time to call in an inspector to tell you where the issue is.

Hope this was helpful for current and future home owners with septic system.

We appreciate your !
